The Lord's Song

2nd Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Amen

youngthatiam:

The bass was pumping. Walls heaving. Lights glaring. It was one of those Saturday nights we’re told are ‘typical,’ the atmosphere was static and bodies dripping with sweat. And I was happy. I can’t remember the last time I was so full of joy, my body pulsating with adrenaline.

The person I am narrating this experience to grins cheekily and elbows me. “Alright cut the lyrical rubbish. Which nightclub is this? What drug? Come on, you have to take me there!! Sounds amazing!”

Sure, I’ll take you there. I’m not sure you’ll be willing at first, but i’ll give it a go away. We’ll enter the big auditorium with the stage and i’ll sit you down and say ”Here we are” and watch your puzzled face as you ponder on the possibility that I might be having you for a laugh. Or that perhaps this is the pre-drinks venue. Or that this is in fact the club, and the room is suddenly going to flip upside down and transform itself into a dancefloor. You’ll give it an awkward smile and 10 seconds.

People our age will be filling the room and sitting down. “Psst! Hey, what is this place?! Hah you’re pranking me aren’t you? Almost had me, nice try. Let’s go to that place you told me about.” And you’re rolling your eyes at me and shaking your head like I’m a bit of a twat for thinking I could fool ‘The Great you.’ But, I’d said we were here.

“Huh? But but where’s the bar?” There’re refreshments at the back..

“Orange juice??! Water??” I didn’t think those could kill you. My turn to roll my eyes.

“Are you crazy?? How can you have such an experience without any alcohol??!” And how can you let alcohol enslave you? Eitherway, I don’t need it. I’ve got The Drug to keep me going. And your eyes will light up when I tell you this.

“Oooh finally! Whatcha got? Weed, ecstasy, meth?” None of the above. I will tell you to wait, and you will be confused. On stage, the band will begin to play. You do not recognise the songs, but you haven’t decided to leave yet because you’re curious. Where have I brought you? A man walks onto the stage and begins to sing and people are standing up and shouting praise, lifting up their hands.

You want to get out of this place because you’re starting to like it, though you can’t understand it. But rather than tell me politely, you’re just staring at everyone around you in marvel, the confusion in your eyes. You get up suddenly saying you’ll dash to the toilet ”uber fast” and be back but I should stay put, you shan’t be long. I nod. And you walk. Away. To the back of the auditorium, the corner. And you stand in this dark corner taking in everything in your sight. What is this place, you’re asking yourself.

Now a boy is walking up to you and he is good-looking, with swagger, fashioned out and piercings here and there. Ah, he must be one of you, you’ll think to yourself and breathe a sigh of relief. He’s your kind of guy, perhaps you can escape this madness together…and elope? And your imagination is running wild at the prospects of a night of lust on his bed. You quickly tug your top down a little, get some cleavage on show. He’s 2 steps away now. “Hey” he smiles warmly, “I haven’t seen you here before. I’m Sam, nice to meet you.”

You flutter your eyelids and tell him your name. “This place is weird, isn’t it?” you smirk. He smiles, “What makes you think that?”

And now you’re stuck…isn’t it obvious to this man of your dreams that this is some sort of freakland?! “Well noone’s dressed fashionably, and there’s no alcohol.”

“Fashion is art. Must art be perverse? I’m dressed fashionably but not revealingly. 1 Corinthians 10 verse 31 says ‘whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.’”

“Oh ‘god,’ “ you’ll think to yourself, “he speaks Bible.” And now it’s dawning on you that you must be in a room full of Christians. “Yeah big deal give glory to God. What’s in it for me?”

“Haha. We don’t give Him glory just for a reward! But I guess He knew we might think way so in His word he does say in Psalm 37 verse 4 to ‘delight ourselves in the Lord, And He shall give us the desires of our hearts.’ “

“Noone’s getting it on. We’re teens. I say that’s a majority of our ‘desire’ covered. So tell your ‘God’ to get to work and get some action going on in here,” you’ll whine.

“1 Corinthians 6:18 says to ‘flee sexual immorality. Every sin that we commit is outside the body, but when we commit sexual immorality we sin against ourselves.”

From where I will have positioned myself to watch you, I’ll read your face at your realisation that dreamy Sam is definitely not the right guy to elope with. It’s almost tragic.

A shrug.“Um..moving on. Why is everyone so f****** happy?” You want to appear tough, unfazed. And hope the slipped swear word will make this Christian maniac flinch and hiss in vehemence. You wait. Nothing, Sam is just smiling at you, his eyes lighting up. You glance at his fly for signs of a boner. Why is this freak suddenly smiling at you? Perhaps swear words turn him on and there is hope? I mean, a guy who doesn’t want you at the sight of you? Pssh…you haven’t experienced that ever since you hit puberty and you’ve taken full advantage of it ever since, the lack of respect and sense of filth doesn’t faze you. It’s power. Like the power that man must have felt when he molested you at the age of 9.

Sam sits on the floor and pats the space next to him. “I’d like to introduce you to Jesus.”

At the mention of this name you feel a shot at your heart. And for some strange reason, you join him on the floor.

———————————————————————————————————————-

The world is in the state it’s in today because it is getting tired of being told that our God is love. In a place as wicked and shocking as the world in which we live, love is a fleeting notion characteristic of the naive and jobless. But that is not all that our God is, the world needs to be reminded that our God is mercy. And that mercy came in the form of His Son Jesus Christ. Who was destined to die to save us, to clean us, to redeem. That act was the greatest act of love, and it spurned from our God’s mercy. So if love came from mercy how do you expect the world to understand love if it does not first understand mercy?

The Bible tells us that we are “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood..His own special people..” in 1 Peter 2:9. But that’s not because we have loved the best, it is because if we were all to reflect on our lives and see where He has brought us from to be who we are today, we shall see that He has been His most merciful. And that is why our generation is ‘special.’ I tell you, Jesus is changing lives. He is transforming. And sins you’ve committed and think you can’t get back from, know now that He’s seen it all before and He can deliver you. Cry out to God for mercy. Pray for grace and a renewal of your spirit, that you may start to tell your friends and everyone you know about this saviour who has delivered you! That you may preach the message of His mercy! For they know of God, but little of Jesus.

The description at the top of this piece was not a nightclub as you now know. The environment is possible, it’s real, it’s true…i’ve been in such before. But it wasn’t a nightclub, it was a youth convention where youths were giving glory to God and dancing and singing praises and worship. The Spirit of God gets you higher than you have ever been. It is The Drug.

You have been chosen. So start to try and derive more from your life and live out your purpose…“For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles —- when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkeness, revelries, drinking parties and abominable idolatries…They think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you. They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. For this reason the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged acording to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.”1 Peter 4:3-6

Start somewhere, anywhere. But start.

Love,

me.
